Unusual Christmas Traditions That’ll Amaze You Like Nothing Else!

Haven’t winters always been about the landscapes draped in snow, people strutting around jollier than ever, celebrations stepping in one after the other and most importantly about Christmas?
For years we have been following the Christmas related traditions of decorating our homes with the prettiest light decorations, putting up beautifully decorated Christmas trees, hanging pairs of socks near the fireplaces and so on!
But do you know that Christmas in some parts of the world is not just limited to these traditions alone? The festival for them has some unusual traditions that need to be followed by all means. Let’s get to know some of the weirdest Christmas traditions practiced around the globe.
Ukraine:
Ever heard of people decorating their Christmas trees with fake spiders and cobwebs?
No? Not me either!
But that’s what the residents of Ukraine do on Christmas. They believe that doing so would bring good luck. The belief has its roots in a story about a poor old lady. According to the story, she was so poor that she couldn’t afford Christmas decorations but when she woke up the next day, she found her Christmas tree covered in a golden spider web! The tale has been passing on to generations one after the other and the people have been following the tradition religiously for ages.

Norway:
In Norway, Christmas is more about protecting one’s family and friends from evil spirits.
The residents here, follow a tradition of hiding all their brooms in the safest place. The custom dates back centuries to when people believed that witches and evil spirits came out on Christmas Eve looking for brooms to ride on. So, it’s just a way of keeping their brooms safe which further symbolizes warding off negativity and bad forces!

Venezuela:
This is the coolest fact you’ll be discovering today. The Christmas celebrations for the residents of Venezuela start with a quick roller skating ride to early morning church services!
Quite a cool tradition, isn’t it?
Well, that’s a typical morning site on Christmas morning in the capital. And guess what! The roads are specially cleared off so as to allow for the unconventional commute.

Austria:
Krampus!
That’s what the kids in Austria fear on Christmas!
Krampus was an ugly and evil creature who was said to punish the naughty children by carrying them along with him in his sack during Christmas. Following the tradition, young men in Austria dress up as the Krampus in the first week of December and frighten the children with clattering chains and bells.
So, for the children in Austria, it’s not just a pair of socks full of black coal as a punishment for being naughty!

Catalonia:
Catalonians have been following the tradition of “defecating log” for years and they still continue sticking to it as a part of their Christmas celebrations.
As per the tradition, in the fortnight leading up to Christmas, a grinning creature is created out of a small log. It is then placed right in the middle of the dining table and every day till Christmas, it is fed with fruits, nuts, sweets and all sorts of goodies.
Finally, on the Christmas eve, it’s showtime! The creature is literally beaten up and forced to poop all the goodies out!

Surprised? That’s not all, I’ll be back with some more weird Christmas traditions in my next post, stay tuned (wink)!
